La la

Hey this is gonna be quick because I am about to go home from work:

I just got an invite to La la. It's a service where you trade CDs with other members.

I haven't yet tried it but it looks pretty cool. The only bummer, in my opinion, is that you're only supposed to trade the CD, not including the liner notes.

Oh and the first swap is free; thereafter, it costs $1.49 ($1 service fee , of which $0.20 goes to the artist supposedly, and $0.49 postage).

To get an invite I just gave 'em my email address. When I start trading, I'll let you know how it goes.

So, I wasn't able to figure this out from their site-- is the supply of CDs in the system entirely dependent on what gets put in by end-users? I worry that'd lead to a pool dominated by stuff nobody wants and stuff donated by the ultra-indie partisan evangelists.

Yes the supply is dependent upon that which is put in by the users. Like I said, I don't know exactly how well it will work but you choose which CDs you want. You list the CDs you have and indicate which ones you are willing to ship/trade out. Then I assume that the people who want your CD and also have a CD that you want will match. What remains to be seen is how willing people will be to trade their more desirable (relative of course) CDs out. I know they already sent me my first CD...essential Steve Earle. So that doesn't say much for anything yet. Also, I noticed that when you leave feedback for people who have sent you CDs, you rate the experience, and one box to check lists "CD sent with liner notes/artwork." So that's cool...it'd be nice to see the entire package, not just the disc, encouraged to be traded.

Well it's a week later. I sent out 5 CDs. So far, I've gotten 1 nice CD back (GZA's 'liquid swordz') and a broke-ass copy of Steve Earle's 'essential steve earle.' But there are nice ones still to come so I'd grade this one an "I."
